Event Details
Before the class begins, Gary Vander Hart, the instructor, spends 16 hours getting the shell ready. Participants will finish making the mountain dulcimer and this includes sanding and varnishing. On the last day, lessons will be given on how to play the instrument. No musical experience is necessary.
The dulcimer has just four strings, and Gary teaches a simple method of musical notation called tablature, which used symbols to represent finger placement rather than pitch.
Gary Vander Hart has taught hundreds of teens and adults how to make the instrument. His legacy in Sioux Center began nearly 60 years ago when he founded the first string program at Sioux Center Christian.
Cost: $60
