Event Details
What are the similarities between reading a scroll in ancient times and “scrolling” on electronic devices now? See and touch samples of the earliest books and learn the history of the book. Professor Scott Culpepper will bring the history of the book alive. He will survey important developments in written communication from earliest times to the development of the book in the early centuries A.D. highlighting the strength and weaknesses of each form.
Dr. Scott Culpepper's program will also showcase the Traveling History of the Book Display at the Sioux Center Public Library from September 15 - October 10. This "hands-on" exhibit is intended to bring to life the invention of writing, paper and books, telling the book's story to both children and adults. The display consists of historically accurate replicas of the book throughout history.
Dr. Scott Culpepper currently serves as professor of history at Dordt University in Sioux Center, IA. He specializes in the fields of early modern Europe and the Americas with a particular emphasis on the interaction of politics, religion, and popular cultures in the Atlantic World from 1400 to the present.
