Scammers are using the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to file fraudulent unemployment claims, often using someone else’s identity. Scammers may even use the identity of someone who is receiving or applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. A recent Iowa scam falsely told Medicare beneficiaries that Medicare was issuing new Medicare cards and required their personal information, which is not true.

To help citizens protect themselves, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer “Money Smart: Avoid Fraud and Protect Your Identity” on Tuesday, April 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sioux Center Public Library.

This interactive workshop delivers researched-based resources and tools to protect personal and financial information, highlights steps to take if your information was hacked, and provides resources for prevention of identity theft. The public library is hosting the event at no charge, and the program will be taught in English with Spanish translation available.

“What protections do you have? What consumer actions are needed immediately if you fear your identity has been stolen?” asks Carol Ehlers, a human sciences specialist in family finance with ISU Extension and Outreach. “This program helps consumers learn about strategies to prevent and respond to personal and financial information exposed in a data breach. If you are a victim, the program will explain how to respond.”

Ehlers explained that as a consumer, there are necessary actions that you can do to protect your financial and other personal information in order to reduce your chances of being an identity theft victim.

“Although this program is focused on responding to fraud and identity theft, all participants will benefit from learning more about avoiding scams,” Ehlers said.

Preregistration is required by April 26 to attend this program, and registration is limited to 50 participants. Register online at http://bit.ly/smart17622 or contact the Sioux Center Public Library, Julie Kreun at 712-722-2138 or preguntas o inscripción (en español) Ruth Mahaffy 712-722-2138.
