Program Description

Event Details

The NW Iowa Dyslexia Support Group meeting is for educators, parents, caregivers, or any community member interested in learning more about dyslexia or how to support dyslexic children and struggling readers.  Each meeting includes a presentation on a topic related to dyslexia, as well as time to connect with other parents or educators.  The NW Iowa Dyslexia Support group is facilitated by Amanda Hulstein, Emily Kramer, Renee Saarloos, and Jacinda Zoet.

Dyslexia and the Social/Emotional Effects Summary: Join us to hear from our guest speaker, Ashley Anderson, a licensed social worker from Sioux Center Health, on how dyslexia can affect your students’ mental health on a daily basis. She will discuss how school can create trauma for these students, how teachers can assist students with dyslexia in self-regulation, and what they can do or avoid doing in the classroom to support dyslexic students. In addition, Ashley will share common mental health concerns for those with learning disabilities and the neuropsychology behind how the brain responds to these struggles. Educators, parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in learning more about dyslexia is welcome to attend.
